    People hated the movie for what it wasn't rather than what it was: A fun pulpy erotic thriller with themes of class woven in but not at the center. It's pretty obvious that movies and art are not meant to solve the world's problems.

    As a woman I have always had empathy for Tara, she put herself and her needs always behind Jax,she lost the ability to be a surgeon which was her dream,she went in jail for helping him and she accepted Jax was often absent indeed she carried the pregnancy alone while Jax was in prison. It's sad that many people hate her for the fake pregnancy after all the good things she had done for Jax. She was just protecting her children, Jax had become a monster and we see how many traumas Abel went through after her death. Her mistake was loving too much Jax forgetting her needs while he cheated on her. Team Tara

    This is by far the best analysis of the film on UA-cam I think, fab work! I also can't get over how misunderstood this film is, and I think you explain it really well with your emphasis on love, obsession, etc. I loved your reading about style over substance as a thread in Oliver's development, that's quite an interesting take. Really enjoyed the essay! Edited to add: I also appreciate how you engage with the film's intertexts, this ads a lot to the interpretation of it that I think a lot of viewers miss by not being as familiar with them.

    As someone who watched the show in 2023, it seems so odd that out of everyone in this show, she is the most hated character. She was like a breath of fresh air to explore the world outside the office and was a very complex character doing the best and the worst she could out of her position in life Ok she was a shitty mother, but that's also a lot of people on the show

    TVD has s huge problem with sexual consent. Just think of all the times women were compelled to have sex with Daemon and other vampires. It starts off by him compelling Caroline, a schoolgirl, to sleep with him, and later, when she remembers it - the show never directly addresses the issue, because it knows that would be a dark fucking conversation.

    I agree it's not purely an eat the rich story, but it's also not... not an eat the rich story. Yes, he's obsessed with Felix before he even sees Saltburn. But why? Felix is popular, he's wanted, he's desired, he is in the in-crowd. Oliver is the polar opposite. Felix is his ticket to getting social acceptance, but then it turns to hatred. Why? Oliver hates being a toy. He hates being a temporary friend, so easily thrown away whenever they get tired of him. Their opinion of him holds too much power over his destiny. And why are they that way? Their wealth insulates them. It gives them to power to objectify other people. Spolied dogs sleeping belly up, no natural predators. He hated them for being such a corrupted version of humanity.

    Subscribed! Literally just finished watching Saltburn and while gorgeous, I was so ready to trash the film bc it seemed lacking in gravitas (when viewed from an "eat the rich" lens). But your video essay made so much sense. It was educational, and what I appreciated the most was your straightforward delivery. Nothing was up to personal opinion too - everything you stated was backed by reference. It made me do a 180 on the film. Can't wait to binge your older videos!

      @@Seriesable no I was just thinking that I enjoyed your video. It actually brought the films theme to life a bit for me. I enjoyed your analysis more than the film itself. I just found the film a bit flat in its attempt to shock. I struggled with the lack of depth to the aristocratic characters, who came across eccentric but rather nice with no description of the actual power they wielded.

    I was so baffled by the media reports that the Palace was upset at a previous season of The Crown and was threatening legal action or something. Because it’s always been clear to everyone with a brain that the show is a propaganda project. Thank you for the video, I have no intention of watching this latest season but it’s good to get a thoughtful summary.

  • @Joshboy324
    @Joshboy324 5 місяців тому

    I agree your perspective; it's not exactly an "eat the rich" story. However, it also isn't precisely as I've described it. I notice you're incorporating a lot of symbolism into each scene, like "She wandered the house like a ghost" or "The grave scene represented [something]." In reality, she was wandering the house hoping Oliver would run into her, and the grave scene was improvised on set.

    • @Seriesable
      @Seriesable 5 місяців тому

      Movies are highly symbolic art forms, even implicitly, as they represent a series of encoded messages. A series of similar symbols make up for a theme - which may not be the direct meaning of a scene (Venetia walks around at night to be seen by Oliver) but constitute an addition to said theme, aesthetic, or overall atmosphere (the gothic genre). The grave scene was indeed written in the script, the way in which it was further took by the actor was improvised (making love to the dirt), the initial remark juxtaposing Heathcliff’s journey and Oliver’s journey remains valid, it was just taken to a more excessive level by the actor (which by the way felt to do so to convey the level of obsession Oliver had towards Felix which is in line with the overall explanation of his character I explained). It wouldn’t be a meaningful video essay, in my opinion, if I just gave a literal explanation of what you’ve already seen for yourself in each scene.

    you have an amazing eye for detail, symbolism, and the english language. i think the mom in this show had a repressed desire to not be a mother, in this small town where she wasn't given any other choice. it mixed with her desire to be needed as a mother/caregiver to create her covertly murderous behavior... sharp objects was a great exploration of the dark side of womanhood and its prescribed and coerced roles. when the women in this town are given no choice but to adhere to narrow expectations of womanhood, they respond by becoming a dark version of that expectation, both embodying it and defying it in order to have power. ultimately, they turn on other women, even if that woman is their own self. they are both the arbiters and enforcers of this role and they choose other women as their victims. they also desire and value the love of other women most, even if it's a twisted perversion of love.

    Great video essay! At the end of my first viewing, I did quickly describe it as an Eat the Rich film, but also felt it was different. I think the most instinctual thing that distinguishes Saltburn from most of the recent films in this genre is that you are meant to feel empathy for the Cattons. They aren’t perfect, but in contrast Oliver is definitely villainous. The Catton’s end feels like a violation rather than something justified or righteous. I usually dislike “[movie] Explained” videos, but I appreciate that you posed a specific topic/misconception in the title to distinguish it from other explanation vids. It definitely drew me in, at least.
